Chawri Bazaar, Delhi

Chawri bazaar is another place to roam in when you plan to visit Delhi best places in these holidays. This is situated in old Delhi which is very well known as commercial centre specializing in brass, copper and paper products. This famous market is exactly on west of jama masjid. The street got this name mainly because here a 'sabha' or meeting would take place in front of a noble's house and he would try settling the disputes before it would reach the emperor. A second reason is probably that a gathering used to get organized when a respected dancer performed and showed the finer nuances of her skill. The whole ambience of the street however got changed after the 1857 war when British destroyed many huge mansions of the nobles.

On lakhori bricks there are a canon kept at gateway of both the building which got octagonal projection at top along with a room either side. The rooms have semi-circular arches to enter and it is difficult to visualize its former shape. The main features of the buildings are its niches and arches at the roof-level on the semi-octagonal projections, though difficult to make out.

At present Chawri bazaar is busiest market place having toiling labourers, crowd of people with number of convinces. At peak time market is overflowed with peoples because of its popularity. Chawri bazaar is basically a wholesale market for items like pots, vase, jewellery boxes and oil lamps. Still there is large number of retail shops of paper products and copper idol of lord Vishnu and lord Buddha. This should be noted that market remains closed on Sunday.
